Garage Sale Trail: Community spirit in Dalston Square
Over 50 community organisations in Hackney held table top sales and spin-off events to raise the profile of Hackney Giving at the Garage Sale Trail on Saturday the 26th of September, with the ‘flagship sale’ at Dalston Square. Clothes, shoes, vintage video games and other personal items were on sale from community groups and local residents. The sale allowed the community groups to hold a fun, community event and increase awareness among the general public about what services their groups offer.
Dalston Square was 1 of 17 sites were the Garage Sale Trail was held. Community groups that participated included: The Old Fire Station Stoke Newington, Community Gardens, Schools and Children’s Centre’s. Other partakers included Rio Cinema who held a film themed sale, CLR James Library who sold old library stock and St Joseph’s Hospice and Homerton Hospital.
A spokesperson from The Nightingale Estate, who participated in the GST, said: ‘Those that turned out really enjoyed it and I met a few new residents, who are going to get back involved in the Nightingale Partnership Residents Association (NPRA), which is a great outcome. Additionally, because of the interest for the event, we're going to run our own monthly jumble sale. Once people know it's happening more regularly, it'll get a lot more people and people will get to know each other’.
Similar sentiments were echoed by Garage Sale Trail Coordinator, Jane Bell, who said: 'This has been an amazing community event, we have had great feedback about the community benefit, which has included community groups taking part being able to promote and raise funds for their own services, while donating a share to Hackney Giving'.
Local resident James MacDaid said of the event: ‘It was a really fun day. We met a few new residents who are going to get back involved in the NPRA, which is a great outcome. Additionally, because of the interest for the event, we're going to run our own monthly jumble sale’.
