Meet our new Community Giving and Partnerships Coordinator

Fatou Gassama recently started working at Hackney Giving as our new Community Giving and Partnerships Coordinator. Fatou tells us a bit more about herself.

Tell us a bit about yourself?
“I’m a mum -and my daughter is now 12 years old. I’m from Mali, but I was born in France. I’ve been in Hackney for about 20 years. I’m a dog lover and I also have a cat.”

Have you always worked for charities?
“I had been working in hospitality and catering for about 15 years and then I was made redundant when I was pregnant. And that was when I started the Confidence Academy for Mums.

What motivates you to work in the charity sector?
“I’m an activist in many ways. I believe in making the world a better place, maybe not for myself, but for my daughter. I’m the chair of the Dalston Community Panel, working with the police. After the Child Q case happened, I was keen to see that there is a bridge between the police and the community.”

What attracted you to Hackney Giving?
“Hackney Giving is a local programme and this job is an opportunity to support the local community where I live. In the past I had received funding for the Confidence Academy for Mums project I delivered in Woodberry Down. When I saw the advert for the Hackney Giving job, it was an opportunity to work for a funder and to be on the other side.”

What skills and knowledge will you bring to the job?
“I have a track record of working with organisations and I have also been involved in my local community in Gillett Square. I’m a people person and I’m very well connected in the Hackney community and with local grassroots organisations. I’ve worked and lived in different parts of Hackney, so I know about the different areas and the different demographics.”

What do you hope to achieve at Hackney Giving?
“I will be fundraising for Hackney Giving and I hope that I will be able to do that as well as I can. I’ll be looking to raise funds in different ways, through events and things like auctions.”

Do you have any hobbies outside of work?
“I love boxing. I go to Moreno Boxing in Gillett Square. It’s a great sport. It’s good to protect yourself and to learn about your resilience. I fight, I just punch the pads.”
